Saturday, January 24, 2015 NATIONAL READATHON DAY
Please join Bridgeside Books, and readers across the country, for the first ever National Readathon Day. National Readathon Day is being held to put a spotlight on literacy and the joys of reading. The goal is to have as many people as possible simply reading! Bookstores, libraries, and individuals will be joining in from around the country and reading all at the same time.
National Readathon Day is a collaboration between the National Book Foundation, GoodReads, Penguin Random House and Mashable to "expand the audience for literature in America."
Stop by anytime between 12:00-4:00pm, and read anything you would like, while curled up in a corner of our comfortable, cozy shop. Readers are invited to bring a cushion or pillow to snuggle up with, too. Of course, we will have delicious cookies and hot cider to sustain your efforts.
As I reflect on the past four years here at Bridgeside Books, I am amazed at how much has changed, how much the shop (and myself!) has grown, and the exciting plans for more growth. I truly had no idea what I was getting myself into when the doors opened four years ago to this day! It has been all positive, and I wouldn’t change a thing.
I am often (okay, I admit…a little too often!) asked ‘How can you make it in this day and age with Amazon, e-books, on line ordering, etc…?’. I can hear the sighs, and groans, of my fellow book sellers as they know exactly what I am talking about! So, I’ll tell you how I can ‘make it’, and, in fact, grow in this kind of environment.
I truly love what I do. Yup, that’s it, the secret. I also live in a community, a state, where we value our local businesses, we SUPPORT one another, we would rather our hard earned dollars stay within our community. I take the time to learn what my customers are looking to read; what they are looking to purchase for their father-in-law, and what did I get him last time?; that they need to rush in, pick out a last minute birthday present for the party that started 5 minutes ago, oh, and can you wrap it?; I have impromptu book discussions at friends’ cookout; I take special orders in the grocery store parking lot; and I could keep going on, and on. My point is, I love what I do, and the people in my community support me in this endeavor.
I often hear ‘Oh, I wish we had a bookshop like this where I live…’, or ‘We don’t have bookshops anymore…’ . First of all, oh my god! You poor, poor person…move immediately to Vermont! We LOVE our bookshops! Secondly, we all make choices of where we spend our time and money. When we take a moment to think about those much loved, small businesses, and do we want them to still be here next year, then we need to do our part to support them. We can’t all do it every single time, but we can make a conscious effort in our daily lives to support locally owned, small businesses. Small businesses are what make a community, what make us unique, and different from Anywhere, USA. I, for one, like being unique!
I am fortunate to live in a place that really appreciates a local, independent bookshop in their community. And, let me tell you, this town is a vibrant, amazing, wonderful community! As Bridgeside Books celebrates four years at 29 Stowe Street, I look forward to the next four years, and beyond. Thank you for all your support, encouragement, and love!
Have you heard the news?! Bridgeside Books has knocked down the wall and we’re expanding into the space next door! This expansion will give us some much needed elbow room, plus the opportunity to expand some of our favorite sections. Plus, more books, more gifts, and home wares…more fun to be had at Bridgeside Books!
We will also, finally, have adequate room for author visits, book groups, and presentations. This space will be available for groups to utilize, as well.
We will remain open throughout the renovation process…stop by and peek at the new space, and don’t mind the sawdust! A celebration is in the works for some time in July…we’ll keep you posted!
Thank you for your ongoing support. We are fortunate to live in such a wonderful community!
